The near and dear do bring some cheer in life, but costs dear, also bring a lot of fears and tears and will in time disappear. However, there is one and only one thing which is the nearest, the most beloved, the very source of happiness, which never leaves us and is completely free ! It is the undotted 'I', my very own dearest Self. It is 'my own sweet home', the only one I truly own.

Vedānta introduces this ever sweet Self to me and makes me truly Self-centred, and that is Its beauty and fascination. Empowered by Self-knowledge Arjuna became victorious, Buddha became Enlightened and Swami Chinmayananda became loved and revered.

People talk in superlatives and high terms about what they love and respect. For example, the movie was superb, the food was rich, the party was fantastic, the subject was captivating, the book was a page turner, the song is beautiful, the lyrics are soul stirring or the vacation was simply marvellous. Also we can talk, listen or engage ourselves for hours in what interests us. On the other hand, if we are disinterested in anything, even a little of it becomes boring, tedious and difficult. Some people have no appetite for anything religious or spiritual, and for some, a little of it goes a long way. The preacher commented that the church clock would never get stolen as everyone kept looking at it and the end of the sermon was an awakening for a certain member of the congregation.

We generally love what we are inclined towards and because of our interest and aptitude, we find it easy. Some students do not even like a maths book, as it gives them problems. As one saint pointed out, 'Materialistic people, have very little spiritual needs, and spiritually inclined people, have very few material needs.'

However, it is seen that with time, exposure and understanding, our interest too changes. One disinterested in music, can become a music buff, or one with a casual interest in art can with deep study, cultivate an appreciation and become a connoisseur of art. A socialite lady, as she was viewing the works of a great artist, commented loudly, "I don't see anything much in these paintings." An art expert who overheard said, "Dear lady, don't you wish you could!"
