Preface

The Maha Bodhi, the Journal of the Maha Bodhi Society of India, is the first and the only Buddhist journal to complete a century. During its glorious journey of 100 years from 1892 1992, the Maha Bodhi has played a very significant role in the renaissance of Buddhism in India, and shed invaluable light on the greatness of the Buddha and Buddhism through hundreds of articles contributed by eminent scholars from all over the world. The material presented in the pages of the Maha Bodhi is so rich and varied that much of it needs to be preserved and placed on the shelves of the libraries for wider circulation. However, having regard to the scope of this volume, I have confined selection only to Indian scholars, and the stalwarts of the Maha Bodhi Society of India. Accordingly, this volume consists of only 50 select articles. The material has been arranged in such a manner so as to provide a step by step insight into all aspects of Buddhism, its development and highest achievements in India. The story of the Founder and the Journal has also been given in brief in lieu of Introduction.

Foreword

The 'Maha Bodhi' is the premier Buddhist journal which has won an international reputation as a Mobile University of Buddha Dhamma. Having the Buddha, the Dhamma and the Sangha, the noble Triple-Gem at its forefront, this journal has rendered an immeasurable service to the cause of Buddhism ever since its inception in 1892.

Ven. Dharmapala founded the journal to serve as a messenger of the Buddha Dhamma. The journals that were edited by him and in his time had devoted hundreds of pages for the propagation of the Dhamma and to create an awareness about Buddhism, its existence in India, Ceylon, Burma, Thailand, Japan, and the spread of Buddhism to western countries.

The Editors and writers who took over the journal after Anagarika Dharmapala followed his character and the style of presentation in every possible way. They too laboured a lot to fulfil the founder's aspirations with devotion.
