Preface

In every country individuals are to be found who occupy themselves in endeavours discover the means of alleviating pain, and of curing In this series, great samts Charaka, Sushruta and Vagbhata composed their Samhitas for welfare of human beings. These Samhitas are so majestic, so richly reflected and so ancient, is still viewed as national interest. These books are the key of Ayurveda. All the Ayurvedic concepts are described in these works.

The word Ayurveda, is composed of two Sanskrit terms, viz Ayus meaning life and veda meaning the knowledge and taken together, it means the "science of life", However, in a limited sense, It is always used to imply the science of Medicine' Charaka has defined Ayurveda as the "science through the help of which one can obtain knowledge about the useful types of life (hita and ahita ayus) happy and miserable types of life, things which are useful and harmful for such types of life, the span of life as well as the very nature of life. It will be seen from this definition that Ayurveda lays emphasis upon not only leading a life which is full of happiness, which implies and individualistic attitude but also leading a life which will be useful to society as a whole. Man is social being. He can not withdraw himself from society, unless the society becomes happy, it will not be possible for the individual to attain or maintain his own happiness, It is with this in view that the individual should always make an effort to subscribe to the happiness of the society and Ayurvedic texts are replete with reformes to the manner in which the society can be kept happy.

Foreword

While Modern western Scientists have recently begun to understand the importance of physiological homeostasis of some Biochemical and metabolic processes in helth and disease, Ayurvedic physicians had given tremendous emphasis on Samya (Homeostasis) at various levels. According to Charak, the dictum "Sama dosah samagniša samadhatu malakriyah.....Swasth Iti abhidhiyate" had deep connotation for the Homeostasis at all the levels mentioned above. Even if Homeostasis may not be perfect equivalent of satmya, resulting into sama, we may try to find some meeting point for the experts of the two systems

In today's context, one cannot escape from the reality that global acceptance of any health system particularly from the trade and commerce angle, is subject to its verification on the westren theoretical Frame work and experimental result. The present work has attempted to investigate this homeostasis in persons of different Prakti (Personality), and socio-ecological conditions and stresses, with particular reference to cardiovascular and neuro endocrine functions. It has also attempted to study the effect of a few selected herbal drugs in animal models in both the organ systems.

Some of the observations made by the author in the experimental animals as well as humen, can have far reching repercussion in developing therapeutic regimen for the cardiovascular and neuro-endocrine conditions. One has to however, make sure that the regimen are not generalized for person of all prakṛti, age group or socio-ecological stresses. It is here that the strength of Ayurveda has given its due importance. Still, the importantce of clinical and experimental research for globlization of Ayurveda in today's world cannot be undermined.

Introduction

Mainenance of physiological homeostasis is the supreme object of Ayurvedic system of Medicine Dhanusamya can only be attained if dosas are in the state of equilibrium. The study of cardiovascular reactivity examines the alternations in cardiovascular activity that occur in resoponse to be stressful. To study the reactivity is the alternation in cardiovascular activity that occur in response to environmental circumstances considered to be stressful. To study the reactivity is the field of interest to the workers belonging to the discipline of psychology, Psycosomatic Medicine and behavioural Medicine. Different individuals show amount of reactivity under the same situation. This individual variation has led reactivity to be regarded as an individual difference dimensia, and all individual difference phenomena are of interest to the physicians. However, reactivity has also attracted attention because of hypothesised links between sizable stress responses and the later development of cardiovascular neuroendocrine and autoimmune diseases. Researchers from the field of psychosomatic and behavioural medicine have therefore extensively investigated the characteristics of reactivity. Behavioural Medicine and psychosomatic Medicine are interdisciplinary field that investigate the role of behaviour in the development of disease. The people of present work is to understand the mechanism of stress reaction and prevention from various physical as well as mental diseases. In the present work, attempt has been made to evalute the individual differences of cardiovascular reactivity and its regulation by certain Ayurvedic drugs.
