Beige Kalamkari Dhurrie from Telangana with Printed Floral Vines

Beige Kalamkari Dhurrie from Telangana with Printed Floral Vines
$65.00
This East Coast pocket of the South is known for its traditional embroidery technique known as kalamkari. It is a portmanteau of the words ‘kalam’ and ‘kari’, which mean pen and handiwork, respectively. The finished embroidery that you see on the rug pictured here is highly characteristic of kalamkari - minimalistic vine and petal motifs, solid colours, and densely spaced across the field. Traditionally a style of fabric painting and saree embroidery, this rug is a unique example of the beauty of this endemic workmanship.

In keeping with traditional kalamkari works of art, this rug features a basic colour palette of cream, ochre, and charcoal. Against a backdrop of cream-dyed jute are superimposed densely packed flowers and vines in predominantly dark grey colour, punctuated by ochre numbers. Hints of a deep cobalt blue are to be found at the base of the petals, adding a splash of pastel to the otherwise earthy palette. A series of ochre flowers against a panel of pale charcoal constitutes the edge of this jute rug.
