Abhishek Patra is a utensil used for bathing the idols or deities of God or Goddess with several liquid ingredients. This ritual is known as “Abhishekam” and is performed in various occasions such Janmashtami, Radhashtami, Shivratri etc. Abhishek Patras come in various designs, shapes and sizes according to the idols to be placed for worshiping.
This Abhishek Patra is made in South India with heavy brass, which appears as glowing as gold. It has a tray on the top where the deities can be seated to be bathed with milk, honey, yogurt, sugar syrup, rose water and fruit juices. All the liquid ingredients are allowed to pass down through the outlet to a separate vessel, in which they are mixed and distributed among the temple guests.
The body of the Patra is multi-layered and engraved with beautiful motifs and designs such as lotus petals, flowers, triangles and circles. The fine finishing and detailing are praiseworthy. The deities are also dressed and ornamented on the Abhishek Patra. Abhishekam has a great importance in Vedic culture. It is considered to be a type of devotional service rendered unto the deities to please them and to increase love and devotion for them.
