Pichwai paintings originate in Nathdwara, Rajasthan; specifically in the Shreenathji temple of the Pushtimarga devotional tradition. These paintings, which traditionally depict the life and leela of Lord Krishna, are made to hang (‘wai’) behind (‘pichhe’) the idol in the garbhagrha.
The painting that you see on this page is a premium, authentic pichhwai painting. A large, fabric-based canvas is painted over with the blue-grey waters of Yamuna. A multitude of lotuses and lotus-pads blooming in its bosom. At the centre of this canvas is a three-dimensional sculpture of the tribhanga murari, Krishna’s most popular iconography.
Zoom in on the marble figurine to take in the finesse and attention to detail with which it has been carved. This composite work of art would be a fine addition to the Vaishnavite’s pooja-room.
