There is a demon called Apasmara under the foot of lord shiva in dancing form ( Natraj). Apasmara represents both ignorance and epilepsy. The myth of Apasmara states that to ensure the knowledge in the world is preserved, he could not be killed. Thus, he is destined for immortality. According to another myth, since Lord Shiva could not destroy Apasmara, he instead took the form of the Lord of the Dance, Nataraja. He performed tandava, the cosmic dance, to suppress Apasmara and managed to crush him under his right foot. Thus, because Apasmara must remain immortal, Lord Shiva must remain forever in this form, suppressing Apasmara forever.
