The great Lord Soorya, solar deity of the Hindu pantheon. As a divine personification of the sun, He is not only a figure of religious importance, but also one that is astrologically significant. The Soorya Devata murti that you see on this page depicts Him in His chariot of seven horses.
The seven horses drawing Soorya’s chariot is the signature aspect of His iconography. Their names are Gayatri, Brihati, Ushnih, Jagati, Trishtubha, Anushtubha, and Pankti. The golden reins about their necks are in the hands of Aruna, the charioteer of Soorya.
The standing Lord Soorya Himself is a shashabhujadhari. Behind Him is a gigantic sun. Visually, it doubles as His halo. The composition is supported by a broad-based circular plinth that barely accommodates all the seven horses.
