Between the fourteenth and sixteenth centuries a wave of Krishna worship swept Hindu India. In Krishna, the Hindus found a loving God who moved among them and shared their pastoral and agricultural pursuits. He was the Lover, and the Soul of mankind was the Beloved. It was Krishna worship which inspired a cycle of poetry in the sixteenth century, which was followed by a cycle of painting in the succeeding three centuries. Out of the art inspired by Krishna worship, Kangra painting is undoubtedly the most tender and charming.
