Lord Krishna was Vishnu incarnated in ihaloka as an irresistibly handsome cowherd. As a child in Mathura and a youth in Vrindavan, He is said to have bewitched women, body and soul everywhere He went. This is a deeply symbolic mythical phenomenon, a reference to the one paramatma and the numerous jeevatma that are helplessly drawn towards it.

The divine conduct of the Lord is referred to as leela. It is a Sanskrt word with playful undertones. The pattachitra that you see on this page is a composite visual narrative of this diverse Krishnaleela, a mosaic of episodes from the ihalokiya (earthly) life of the divine. At the centre, of course, He is shown in unison with His best beloved, the fair Radha, surrounded as they are by a bunch of Vrindavan milkmaids (gopiyaan), each more insanely in love with Him than another.

The arrangement of the panels - some angular, some circular, and the outermost series a unique motif - makes for an attractive pattern. Executed in a limited colour palette of black and white with hints of carmine, this complex composition is very skilfully done.
