Pather Panchali Nischlndapur - a village on the bank of Ichamatl river. Mango orchards, bamboo grooves, bananas and coconuts.... One of a thousand such villages In Bengal. Here lives Harihar Roy with his family consisting his wife Sarbajaya, his daughter Durga and a distant cousin Indirthakrun. The story revolves around harilhar and his impoverised family fight of survival against the rich zamindars, Priest by profession, Harihar has a distinct talent of poetry. But nothing going well, he gets a job as an accountant at the zamindar's treasury but does not get any remuneration. In the course of time, he is blessed Apu, his son. His lack of means and various circumstances drive his daughter to die of pnemonia. This proves a turning point in his life and he, with his family, leaves for Banaras seeking a better life.
Aprajito 1920, Harihar with wife Sarbajaya and 10 year old son Apu has moved to the holy city of Benaras. Harihar earns a meager by reciting religous scriptures. Tragedy strikes when Harihar fall ill with fever and collapses at the riverbank and dies soon after. The mother Sarbajaya decides to relocate to her uncle's village where Apu resumes his education at the local School, Apu, now sixteen wins a scholarship and departs for Calcutta, leaving his mother alone. It breaks Sarbajaya's heart, but she relents. Engulfed in city life-studying during the day and working in a printing press at night. Apu grows away from his mother. His visits get shorter as the time passes. This emotional distance unnoticed by the growing Apu, hurts Sarbajaya deeply. On a night sparkling with dancing fireflies, Sarbajaya dies. Apu comes back to an empty house. He grieves for his mother, but soon finds strength to leave the village for the last time, to carry on with his new life in the city.....
Jashaghar 1930's, Bengal. Biswambhar Roy is the lost in a long line of rich patriarchs. He continues to cling to his refined tastes even as his estate is diminishing. AII that remains is his two loyal servants, a horse, an elephant, and the crumbling palace. His inability to adapt with changing times has made him into a recluse. He has closed the music room for good. The sound of music from the neighbor's house and a wish to demonstrate his fine taste in music to his flashy neighbor leads him to organize one last concert. The music room is opened once again. After all the guests have left, a drunk Roy remembers the past glory. He proudly introduces portraits of his ancestors to his servant. He notices a big spider on his own portrait. As the candles go out one by one, Roy is convinced that he too must depart with the extinguishing of the last candle. It is almost dawn now so he need not worry about the candles .In a grand gesture, he mounts his horse and rides at a terrible pace to be violently thrown off. Roy dies as two servants look on tearfully.
Kanchanjangha Indranath Chowdhury, chairman of five companies comes to the Darjeeling with his family for a holiday. Labony, Indranath's wife, once a sensitive woman is now resigned to total submission to her husband's will. Brothr-in-Iaw Jagadish is a widower and a womaniser. The other members of the family are Anima, the eldest daughter, her husband Shankar, their Six year old daughter Tuklu, Indranath's son Anil and daughter Monisha. Paranab, a bright young engineer is in love with Monisha. Monisha does not like him enough to marry. Shibsankar, once a private tutor to Anil meets Indranath on the Mall and Introduces his nephew Ashok with a hope to get a job for him. A bitter quarrel ensues between Anima and Shankar and because of their daughter an uneasy compromise is achieved. Ashok on discovering the hollow man within, declines Indranath's offer of a job. Monisha breaks away with Pranab and strikes a worm relationship with Ashok. Indranath senses that the domination is at an end and realises the inevitable truth.
Abhijan Narsingh, a taxi driver, is a proud and hot-tempered Rajput with a passion for his car, a vintage 1930 Chrysler. He recklessly passes the car of powerful, local policeman and has his permit taken away. It forces him to take refuge in a small town on the borders of the states of Bengal and Bihar. Sukhanram a shady merchant offers him a handsome fee to transport some merchandise, and soon he finds himself into trafficking in opium. Narsingh Is attracted to Neeli, reserved Catholic schoolteaCher. She has no interest in Narsingh. A beautiful prostitute Gulabi has an instinctive liking towards Narsingh. Unaware that Neeli has already committed herself to another man, a cripple, for Neeli's sake, Narsingh begins to reform himself and even takes interest in her religion. But soon finds himself helping Neeli elope with her cripple lover. He also is seduced by Sukhanram and his lawyer friends to enter into a partnership and is even willing to sell off his car to invest in the smuggling venture.
Chiriyakhana Nishanath Sen, retired session Judge, owns a nursery -cum-dairy farm which he calls Golap Colony. This colony provides refuge to a number of people who for various reasons are unable to earn a livelihood in the normal way. The various inmates came from different backgrounds and profession and it gives the film the right mood and essence of a true detective movie. On a rainy morning Nishanath approaches Byomkesh Bakshi in order to solve certain controversy regarding the connection of one of his inmates, ex film actress Sukanya, to the murder of a jeweller. Byomkesh begins his work by taking a look at the Colony and its Inmates in the disguise of a Japanese horticulturalist. Thereafter the story takes its own turn. Gradually some shrewd deductions are drawn and a daring sortie into the heart of Calcutta's Anglo-Indian neighbourhood on the heels of a suspect, finally leads Byomkesh to the solution. The end comes in the colony itself with a unexpected dramatic climax.
Seeemabaddha Shyamal is an ambitious Marketing Manager in a British firm, manufacturing fans. He lives in a company flat with wife, Dolan. He aspires to become the Company director. His sister in law Tutul, a great admirer of the ideologist Shyamal arrives from Patna to spend a few days with them. Tutul is Syamal's conscience. He shows her the delights of Calcutta life-the cocktail parties, the clubs and horse racing. A consignment of fans meant for exports is found defective. It could result in cancellation of the export contract and end to his dream of becoming a director. Hopeless, Shyamal takes Tutul in confidence though not his wife. He hatches a plan with the labor officer to provoke a strike at the factory. A factory watchman is badly injured and a lockout is declared. The export contract is saved. Shyamal becomes a director but he has fallen low both in the eyes of Tutul and his own.
Ashani Sanket Gongacharan, an educated Brahmin, has arrived to settle in the village with his wife, Ananga, a sensitive woman, giving and devoted to her husband. The distant World War II changes the village. Gangacharan is only little more informed than the villagers. As a few aeroplanes disturb the peaceful sky, the word goes around that the war will result in a scarcity of rice and as a result the price of rice soars. To eat, the villagers are reduced to animal-like existence, forced to beg for food. Ananga offers to work for food and she goes to work with other village women. Ananga along with Chutki goes to the forest to look for wild potatoes. A man tries to take Ananga. Chutkl kills the man with the bar she used to dig potatoes. An untouchable-caste woman dies for hunger; the first starvation death in the village. Gangacharan, breaking the taboo, give her a proper cremation. Even as we learn that Ananga is pregnant, we see the villagers leave in search of food in silhouettes. The screen is filled with a statement-? Over five million died of starvation and epidemics in Bengal in what has come to be known as the man-made famine of 1943."
Sonar Kella Mukul, 6 years old son of Sudhir Dhar, shows signs of having memories of previous birth. He keeps talking and drawing pictures of a 'Golden Fortress'. Dr. Hazra examines Mukul and surmises that the place is in western Rajasthan and takes Mukul to Jodhpur for its search. Before leaving, Mukul talks to journalists of seeing precious jewels, who publishes this into a hidden treasure story. Crooks Burman and Bose read the story and after winning Mukul's trust co continue his journey to find the treasure. Felu, a private detective is hired b Sudhir on learning that his son is in danger. The story moves with Burman and Bose managing to hoodwink Felu and moving closer to the trasure. The climax comes in the Golden Fortress in Jaisalmer, where Felu is able to free Mukul from danger, as well as from his obsession.
Hirak Rajar Deshe Granted 3 wishes by the benign King of Goblins, Goopy and Bagha possess magical powers. They receive on invitation from the King of Hirok. Hirok, named after the diamond mine, is a police state ruled by a tyrant King. So much so, that the King has also closed down the only school run by an idealist teacher Udayan. Goopy and Bogha chance upon Udayan in a cave, who is in hiding and plotting to dethrone the King. Knowing the real story of Hirok, the three decide to team up. Goopy and Bagha, aided with their magical music making, finally succeed in thwarting the King. Victory is achieved by the three, aided by the peasants, the mine workers and Udayan's young pupils.
