The era where cross dressing for a man is an insult, one man dressed like a women and thrilled the entire world with his skill of singing, acting and beauty. The time when there were no female actresses acting on stage due to degraded profession a cross dressed man confide to an Indian women on stage. The man who showed the grandeur of stage sets, vocals, ambience first time to the Indian audience. His aim was to entertain audience with a grand visuals, great ambience, mesmerizing music even if he was under the financial crunches. An Actor, great fashion Icon fantastic singer, superb visualiser and he is none other than Narayan Shreepad Rajhans alias Balgandharva.

Balgandharva was born in June 26th 1888. The era when acting on stage even for men was not so respectful profession but Balgandharva was on personality who accepted this challenge with his mothers support. Lokmanya Tilak who appreciated this young talent at the age of 10 to 12 years . This young talent received a title from Mr. Tilak as Balgandharva (Sound of heaven).

Which he was known later on. Balgandharva was hearing impaired and king of Kolhapur Shahoo sponsored Balgandharva for the treatment a Miraj, same time Kirloskar Company the production house was in meeraj he also was referred to this production house by the king and later the same talent was the most popular everywhere.

Beginning of Gandharva era ....
Balgandharva was lucky to have mentors in acting like Deval, Khadilkar, Bodas and singing stalvarts like Govindrao Tembe, Bhaskar Bakhle krishnarao, Sundara etc. In 1905 Balgandharva entered to Kirloska production house with remarkable musical performance in "Sharda", "Malini", "Shankuntala" etc ... With appreciation and applauses from audience Gandharva era started at 1911.

Balgandharva always performed as characters like Sindhu, Rukhmani, Subharda etc. where audience could make out the difference in each character and the was his skill. While performing he never sits due to the crease on saree.

Gandharva production house
Gandharva production house performs three shows in a week i.e. Wednesday, Saturday & Sunday from which Sundays show time is 3 pm but Balgandharva reaches at 12 noon for other preparations. To perform as female clean shave, full body waxing then bathing with ice chilled water with mixture of milk. After performance an hour bathing from which half an hour scented oil massage. He never used to eat anything before performance.

Audience as lord ...
Audience was everything for Balgandharva, so he treated and calls audience as LORD, Serving audience with utmost care and no compromise even in any sets, lighting, visual, ambience, fragrance etc ... even when he was bankrupt. Catering to audience was his duty where he over looked his personal and social problems. He never missed to bow down in front of audience after performance. He also took care of his costars in all the aspects.

Balgandharva thrilled the his era with his musical dramas. But his life itself was one Cinema. A bigscreen cinema with mixture of happiness and sorrow. Balgandharva improved the look of theater to audience. Famous Fraternities feels lucky accompany Balgandharva. His personality was magical. Famous Production Designer Nitin Chandrakant Desai accepted the challenge to produce film on Balgandharva under the banner of Iconic Chandrakant Productions Pvt. Ltd. as first venture. Abhiram Bhadkamkar screenplay dialogue writer who interviewed many personalities who was in directly and indirectly connected with Balgandharva and then wrote this subject. Music is given by Kaushal Inamdar. Nitin Desai, Cinematographer Mahesh Limaye and famous fashion designer Neeta Lulla has recreated the era of Balgandharva. Ravi Jadhav directed this film. Popular actor Subodh Bhave played the role of Balgandharva along with Vibhavari Deshpande, Kishor Kadam, Avinash narkar are the co-star of the film.

Nitin Desai executed this project to for silver screen with inspiration of Balgandharva and his style.
