Book Description

Publisher’s note to the second Edition

This second edition of the Mundaka Upanisad we are glad to state has been thoroughly revised by the translator himself.

Publisher’s note to the first Edition

The Mundaka Upanisad is second in the series of Upanisadsd being published separately, taking each of them in its entirety from the earlier two volume edition eight Upanisads. The first in the series the Aitareya Upanisad has been published recently.

In the translation of the commentary the words quoted from the text by Sri Sankaracarya are given in italics. These are followed by commas and the English equivalents informative explanatory footnotes have been added where ever necessary.

The Mundaka Upanisad consiting of sixty four mantras belongs to the atharva Veda. It is divided into three chapters or mundakas and each of these into two cantos or khandas.

As the name of the Upanisad itself suggests the teachings revealed in it are such as to leave its student clean like a shaven head rid of the veil of ignorance further the study of this Upanisad had been traditionally confined to the shaven heads the sannyasins renouncing everything and devoting themselves exclusively to contemplation. Therefore one can hope to spiritually benefit more from this Upanisad when imbued with a degree of dispassion and detachment and practicing repeated contemplation of its teachings.

In itself the Upanisad is arrestingly sublime and direct in teaching the one by knowing which all this becomes known couched in poetic language. A devoted study of this dominant note is sure to spiritualize one’s perspective and make life more edifying. The lucid translation of the text along wit sankaracarya commentary on it is an additional aid to comprehend the profundity of the subject.
