Foreword

Indian Culture is very long and very rich in values. It is spiritual, materialistic, logical, scientific and philosophical too. It appreciates the needs of materialistic world with longings of enquiring mind and has found an answer and solution in the various practices followed through ages. The itihaasaas Ramaayana and Mahabharata which are biography of the lords in His human forms also speak of the great practices and their values.

One of them is practice of Shraaddham which is to propitiate the deceased ancestors, who have become pitrus(MANES).The Indian generations, have traced the passage and the place for such departed souls. While the ultimate for any soul is Moksha or liberation there are different levels ,which the soul passes after death.

Immediately after death, the man transforms into Praetha Swaroopa, which elevates into Pitru Swaroopa, after Sapindakarnam.(on this day, the departed soul attains pitru loka and gets entitlement for shraddham, pindam, tarpanams etc., which the other pitrus are entitled to.) The Indian culture has also identified the three stages of the Pitru as VASU RUDRAAADITYA . It is identified that VASUS = 8(ASHTA VASUKKAL), RUDRAS = 11(EKADASHA RUDRA), AADITYA = 12 (DWAADASHA AADITYA).(it is pertinent to note the modern scientific astronomers have identified the SECOND SUN ie., AADITYA

Indian culture can live in materialistic plains too. They have recognized the greatness and values of gratitude. Gratitude to our ancestors is ranked the highest and that has formulated the practices of shraaddhams and tarpanams. Having love for the universe, which is the basic tenet of Indian culture, has brought in the concept of mahaalaya paksha shraaddham.

The shraaddham during this period is not confined to parents and grand parents but extends to all the people , animals and birds, plants and creepers, which are associated with humanity. Propitiating such great person ensures, prosperity, happiness and freedom from evils for the universe. The modern lady with domestic, official and industrial, social, responsibity, Sow. Meenakshi is fortunate to realize the value of mahaalaya paksha shraaddha. She deserves all appreciation for attempting in bringing the book in Devanagari/English and Tamil explaining not only the verses but also prayogam.

It is significant to note that she has brought out pictorial depiction of the various kriyaas which otherwise confuses many people. In the modern world when both the Purohit and the Kartaas are in a hurry, this book will positively help correct practices of the tarpanams

A special appreciation for proper deconjusting of the mantras. This book also clears the doubt about Who are Pitru Pitaamahaa, pitaamahees and so on. My prayers are Sow. Meenakshi is blessed with a long and happy life to bring out such books which are useful for the society.A word of caution for the user.

Please read this book, well in advance before Mahalayapaksha. Understand the various practices and follow the mantras when recited by the Priests.
