हमारे देश के पढे-लिखे ब्राह्मण युवकों को भी अपने गोत्र, वेद, उपवेद, शाखा-सूत्र आदि की पूरी जानकारी नहीं है

कुछ अति प्रगतिशील ब्राह्मण युवक तो नहीं, किन्तु अधिकाश ब्राह्मण युवकों में यह जिज्ञासा है कि गोत्र, प्रवर, शाखा, सूत्र क्या हैं' इसकी परम्परा क्यों और कैसे पड़ी? हमारे पूर्वज पहले कहां रहते थे? या हम किस स्थान के मूलवासी है? इत्यादि बातें जानने की कभी-कभी इच्छा उत्पन्न हो जाती है उन जिज्ञासु ब्राह्मण युवकों की जिज्ञासा को तृप्त करने के लिए डी०पी०बी० पब्लिकेशन्स के प्रकाशक श्री अमित अग्रवालजी ने, ''ब्राह्मण गोत्रावली'' नाम से एक छोटी पुस्तक सरल एव बोधगम्य भाषा में लिखने के लिए निवेदन किया ।

पुराणकर्ताओं ने भारतवर्षीय ब्राह्मणों को विध्योत्तरवासी और विंध्व दक्षिणवासी कहकर दो भागों में विभाजित कर दिया और उनका नाम गौड़ तथा द्रविड़ रखा विंध्योत्तरवासी गौड़ और विंध्य दक्षिणवासी द्रविण विभिन्न क्षेत्र विशेष में रहने के कारण दोनों के 5-5 भाग हो गये, जैसे-गौड़ ब्राह्मणों में-सरस्वती नदी के आसपास रहने वाले ब्राह्मण सारस्वत:, कन्नौज के आसपास के क्षेत्र में रहने वालों को कान्यकुब्ज, मिथिला में रहने वालों को मैथिल, अयोध्या के उत्तर सरयू नदी से पार रहने वाले सरयू पारीण, उड़ीसा में रहने वाले उत्कल तथा शेष भाग में रहने वाले गौड़ कहलाये इसी प्रकार द्रविण ब्राह्मणों को क्षेत्रीय आधार पर 5 भागों में विभक्त किया गया है, जैसे-कर्नाटक में रहने वाले कर्नाटक ब्राह्मण, आंध्रा में रहने वाले 'तैलग ब्राह्मण महाराष्ट्र में मराठी, गुजरात में रहने वाले गुर्जर ब्राह्मण तथा शेष भाग में रहने वाले द्रविण कहलाते हैं

इस लघु पुस्तिका में केवल विध्योत्तर वासी ब्राह्मणों, जैसे-गौड, सारस्वत, मैथिल, कान्यकुब्ज, सरयूपारीण तथा उत्कल ब्राह्मणों के गोत्र, प्रवर, शाखा, सूत्र, शिखा, छन्द, उपवेद, आस्पद (उपाधियां) तथा मूल गावों का संक्षेप में वर्णन किया गया है।

आशा है, जिज्ञासु ब्राह्मण युवकों की जिज्ञासा कुछ हद तक शान्त होगी, किन्तु ब्राह्मणों का ऋषि गोत्र एक सागर के समान है। उसमें से कुछ मोती ही चुनकर इस पुस्तक में रखने का प्रयास किया गया हैं।

कृपालु पाठकों से निवेदन है कि यदि किसी कुल के गोत्र प्रवर आदि के निर्णय में विसगतियां दिखायी दें, जो उनकी परम्पराओं के विरुद्ध हों, तो कृपया हमें सूचित करें, जिससे अगले सस्करण में सुधार किया जा सकें।
