This book aims at rendering service to rasikas and learners who are interested in some popular krithis that are ever green in memory. These are presented in the Diacritical Roman Script that enables the music-lover to need and learn the krithis with ease and confidence. Learners of any mother tongue can use this look and feel the soul satisfaction of learning and rendering them.
In the fast-changing situation in Carnatic Music old popular masterpieces are being replaced by new compositions of a lighter variety with catchy tunes. The compositions of Annamacharya and Uttukadu Venkatasubayyar set in attractive varnamettus, are preferred by both musicians and listeners. Many new composers lie Periyasami Thooran, Dayananda Sarasvati and Ambujam Krshna have come into the field and some of their compositions have great popular appeal.
Besides, songs like "Krshna ni begane” and "Asaindadum mayil" are being danced in Bharatanatyam. Even songs like "Kurai Onrum illai" by Rajaji and "Santi Nilava Vendum" by Setu Madhava Rao are in great demand by a section of rasikas.
But these songs are scattered in different publications and some of them are available only in cassettes. Notation is available only for some of them. Considering all these facts, Vidwan T.R. Thiyagarajan has come forward to collect popular songs in Sanskrit, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada, write them down in notation and publish them to be sold at an affordable price. He has furnished full pronunciation marks, He has also added the rag a names, talas, arohana and avarohana and the name of the composers. The edition is thus complete in all respects and conforms to the highest standard of editing kritis.
I heartily recommend his labour of love to the music world as it is the only one of its kind published in recent years.
In the art of music, the compositions of great Exponents have contributed to a larger extent in organising conserts and to popularise the krithis . This book aims at the compilation of some of the songs that are with melodious tunes and meaningful and divine lyrics. They are by and large sung by many musicians and this by itself proves that the compositions are liked by the singers and listeners as well. The songs are also compatible for instruments in solo, as well as in accompaniments.
The krithis are selectively picked up from the contributions of the following composers Annamacharya, Purandaradasa, Uttukkadu Venkatasubbaiyar, Ghanam Krishnayyar, Subramanya Bharati, Setu Madava Rao, Rajaji (Rajagopalacharyar), Pattnam Subramanya lyer, Papanasam sivan, Periasami Thooran, Ambujam Krshna, H H Dhayananda Sarasvati and Madurai T. Srinivasan.
Music has no language barrier and still there is hesitation for the singers due to the pronunciation risk that impedes them to confidently sing. Thereby this book comes handy for them as Diacritical Roman Script is used. This facilitates to sing the song with ease and with the correct pronunciation of the respective words. Moreover this book can be used by music lovers of all ages.
