Astronomy and Agriculture are two natural sciences which are perhaps an old as the human race itself. They are natural sciences in the sense their off spring is so natural in the evolution of human intelligence that no continent could avoid these studies in any period either in the dancing days or dooming days! Of these two again astronomy commands a higher pedestrian since it tries to quench the natural instinct of the human race to peep into the future.
While the Greek the Babilonian the Mexican and other European achievements in this direction were propagated widely it is unfortunate that we in India are into able to effectively focus our ancient achievements in this line even though we clearly knew that we were the earliest torch bearers in technical terms on one had and a treasure of books on the other Even the available old text books are hard nuts for us today.
As a part of the focus area of R&D activity I-SERVE (Institute of Scientific Research on Vedas) working on ancient Astronomy & Cosmology and drew the attention of its faculty consistently and made them organize five conferences are bring out four publications so fat. Thus a stage is now reached where the work already done is to be consolidated and the knowledge gathered is to be utilized to decode the hitherto un understood or half understood portions of the ancient text books so that we will be able to predict many astronomical events and their consequences with precisions of time and place in a manner similar to our far off ancestors.
As a part of this exercise we are now bringing out this volume viz. ancient Indian astronomy & cosmology. The present volume contains only a few of the valuable papers collected by us and this volume aims only at giving the outlines of the subject. Some more volumes comprising of more technical papers are in the pipe line. We whole heatedly thank all the stalwarts who contributed their papers with a missionary zeal and commitment. We hope that the volume will be successful in rousing the interest of future researchers and thus help opening new doors into the kingdom of ancient Indian astronomy & Cosmology.
