He drew the curved thatched huts of rural Bengal and the grey, overladen sky of the monsoons. Just as his landscapes echoed the moods of this land, his portraits captured the essence of a character. His vivid retelling of Indian myths and legends were once described as "writing with painting".
Painter, set designer, Illustrator, Storyteller and fabulist, Abanindranath Tagore led the renaissance in Indian art by dedicating his life to the revival of the traditions of ancient Indian painting. Belonging to the extraordinary Tagore family of Jovasanko in Calcutta, his muse was the poet Rabindranath. Myriad-minded Abanindranath's sensitive and unforgettable paintings are today among the masterpieces of modern Indian art.
