Shripad Damodar Satwalekar was a polymath with interests in painting, social health, Ayurveda, Yoga, and Vedic literature. Ayurveda, Yoga, and the Vedas (especially in the examination of the Vedas at the level of adhibhuta) were all among Satwalekar's interests. He also produced various works on these topics.
Satwalekar participated in a number of outreach and social service initiatives. He supported yoga and offered Gandhi advice on the topic. He collaborated with Raja Bhawanrao to promote Surya Namaskar while he was living in Aundh. In 1968, Satwalekar received the Padma Bhushan. Twice he received the Mayo Award, once for sculpture and once for painting.
