The work that you see on this page is a composite painting. Against a canvas of rough-hewn tussar silk are executed multiple panels, each of which is a complete composition in itself. In the upper and lower panels are miniature dancing figures with deers prancing amidst them, and men going about their business accompanied by camels, horses, and even a peacock. The central panel features a mandala partly made up of miniature dancing figures. The same is flanked by identical snatches of the Western Ghats landscape that comprises a mud hut, green grass, and a coconut tree populated with monkeys. Between and around these panels are elongated panels of more dancing figures, a procession of colourful elephants, and even a row of trees with luscious green canopies that are in perfect symmetry with each other.
This painting is a unique work of Warli art because, in terms of colour and scale, it deviates from convention. Solid blues, reds, and greens define the clothes on the figures, while the fauna are to be found in gold, white, and crimson.
