Thumri is a call for love. Union and Seperation are two shades of Love. Thumries delineate those passions which are augmented by absence of the Lover. Two schools of Thumries, Purab Anga and Punjab Anga have enriched the art of Thumri in their own style. Purab Anga Thumri speaks in longer phrases with a fewer notes. It shows Thehrao on Swaras. Purab Anga again encompasses Royal Lucknow style and Popular Banaras style. Purab Anga enriched itself by elevating many Folk-styles in vogue in that region. Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana Gharana, Begum Akhtar of Delhi-Patiala-Kirana and Hira Devi Mishra of Banaras Gharana are the Champions of Purab Anga Thumri. Punjab Anga Thumri progresses in lighter nuances. It shows Belelao of Swaras. It uses smaller phrases with powerful flashes of numerous notes. It keeps listeners guessing about the musical development of Thumri. Patiala and Sham Churasi Gharanas are the pioneers of Punjabi Thumri. Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of Kusur-Patiala Gharana, his brother Ustad Barkat Ali Khan and son Ustad Munnawar Ali Khan are the Stalwarts of Punjabi Thumri. Both the styles have taught people how the language of Love speaks even when in Despair.
