Preface

Ancient Vastu texts contain detailed information about temple Vastu, residences, palaces, forts and Vastu for town-planning (nagar-vidhana). Agriculture was the main occupation for earlier civilisations. In India, agriculture was considered to be the most respected occupation and was the main source of earning a livelihood. Mass level manufacturing started only in the twentieth century. Even trading as an occupation in earlier days involved carrying the merchandise and traveling to far flung areas.

The Vastu principles thus need to be adapted in the modern context, where the focus has shifted from agriculture to industrial and commercial establishments as a major source of earning co livelihood. It is the application of Vastu principles in modern context that is being discussed in this book. My earlier book ‘A Comprehensive study—Vastu for Homes’ deals with residential Vastu in considerable detail and can be referred to for a thorough understanding of the fundamental principles.

For an application of Vastu Shastra in the modern context, it is important to understand the essence of the shastra and its fundamental principles. The first few chapters underline the basic guidelines of Vastu Shastra and its fundamentals. Vastu Shastra takes into cognisance the various energies around us and helps in bringing a balance between our inner and outer spaces. Vastu is slowly becoming an integral part of modern architecture. Our ancient sages arrived at certain basic thumb rules that defined the comfort, prosperity, contentment and happiness of the residents of Vastu-based structures. It is very important to understand the difference between Vastu for residences and Vastu for workspaces, be it an office, shop, factory, hospital or educational institute. The main difference in application for residential and workplace Vastu lies in the goals and the type of energies most suited for maximum fulfillment of defined goals in both cases.

In residential Vastu, the goals are all four, Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha, while in workplace Vastu, the prime objective is Artha or money-making. The very survival of any business depends on its profitability. Unfriendly residential Vastu affects only one family, but unfriendly Vastu at workplace affects a number of people viz, the owner, staff, customers, visitors and shareholders. Therefore, adherence to Vastu principles is important for workplaces. Vastu creates work spaces which are conducive to efficient and stress-free working. A peaceful, energetic atmosphere gives quality work and leads to higher productivity and profitability for the organization.

The second difference in residential and workplace Vastu is the type of energies which are most suited for maximum fulfillment of defined goals. The concepts of Purusha and Prakriti, Shiva and Shakti, Yin and Yang, Solar and Lunar currents and Masculine and Feminine energies are relevant in this context. Let’s look at this in more detail. An office is a place where people gather with one aim in mind: to work together to generate greater levels of wealth for all concerned. Because this requires action rather than contemplation, an office should lean towards Yang or Masculine energy. It should be bright and angular, since these are Yang qualities which will stimulate everyone to work hard and get jobs done. Very often, however, offices do not lean towards Yang, masculine or solar qualities and instead lean towards Yin, feminine and lunar energies, with muted lighting and rounded objects and furniture. This lulls everyone into classic Yin mode of relaxing, so goals are not met and wealth is not generated as quickly as it should be. If this continues over a long period, the whole business could collapse, simply because the feminine and lunai energies have been dominant.

The goals for residential Vastu on the other hand are contentment, comfort, peace and happiness. The home is a place where we recharge our body and soul to face the challenges of the next day. It is essential that houses should have a more secure, nurturing and relaxed feel to them. The Yin or Feminine energies, therefore, have a greater role to play in a home. Ambient lighting and curves rather than angles are desirable.

Another important factor which needs to be stressed in case of Vastu for workspaces is that a businessman cannot get the desired results by focusing on business premises alone. A businessman should ensure that the Vastu of his house is also in perfect order. We spend at least 8- 10 hrs. a day in our homes, our bedroom and the rest of the house is equally important. A Vastu-based home can provide an optimum level of positive energy to perform our social, business and personal obligations in the best possible manner.

An attempt has been made in this book to correlate astrology, planets and their significations, directions and their significations to determine the suitability of different directions with occupations. The orientation of the plot or building towards a particular direction can be useful for certain business activities. I would appreciate a feedback and viewpoints of my readers and scholars in the field about these sections in the book. It is likely that there are points and counter-points and I would appreciate if you could put across your frank suggestions and views.

The esteemed public received my first book “A Comprehensive Study—Vastu for Homes’ very well. I am confident that readers will find this book interesting and receive it with the same enthusiasm. The completion of this book would not have been possible without the cooperation and assistance of many persons. I thank my dear husband Sharat and sons Devaansh and Ritvic, my father and my friends for their cooperation and help.

I express my thanks to Mr. Arun K. Bansal, President, All India Federation Astrologers’ Societies (Regd.) for his active help and encouragement.

I am grateful to my publisher, UBS Publishers’ Distributors Ltd., for the active help and encouragement and a virtual free hand in planning of titles, layout and cover designs.
